Databases & Jobs in BizTalk server

BizTalk server installs several databases in SQL Server. BizTalk server runtime operations typically use the first 4 databases:

  • BizTalk Management Db
  • MessageBox Db
  • Tracking Db
  • SSO Db

Table below is from documentation of BizTalk Server describes the typically usage for the BizTalk Server Db.

Database Default database name Description
BAM Analysis BAMAnalysis This database contains Business Activity Monitoring (BAM) OLAP cubes for both online and offline analysis.
BAM Archive BAMArchive This database archives old business activity data. Create a BAM Archive database to minimize the accumulation of business activity data in the BAM Primary Import database.
BAM Notification Services Application database BAMAlertsApplication This database contains alert information for BAM notifications. For example, when you create an alert using the BAM portal, entries are inserted in the database specifying the conditions and events to which the alert pertains, as well as other supporting data items for the alert.
BAM Notification Services Instance database BAMAlertsNSMain This database contains instance information specifying how the notification services connect to the system that BAM is monitoring.
BAM Primary Import database BAMPrimaryImport This is the database where BAM collects raw tracking data.
BAM Star Schema BAMStarSchema This database contains the staging table, and the measure and dimension tables.
BizTalk Management database BizTalkMgmtDb This database is the central meta-information store for all instances of BizTalk Server.
BizTalk MessageBox database BizTalkMsgBoxDb This database is used by the BizTalk Server engine for routing, queuing, instance management, and a variety of other tasks.
BizTalk Tracking database BizTalkDTADb This database stores health monitoring data tracked by the BizTalk Server tracking engine.
Rule Engine database BizTalkRuleEngineDb This database is a repository for:

  • Policies, which are sets of related rules.
  • Vocabularies, which are collections of user-friendly, domain-specific names for data references in rules.
SSO database SSODB This Enterprise Single Sign-On database securely stores the configuration information for receive locations.
Windows SharePoint Services configuration database User-defined This database contains all of the global settings for the server.
Windows SharePoint Services content database User-defined This database contains all of the site content, such as list items and documents.

Db Structure and Jobs

The figure shows the processes and entities that write to the BizTalk server Db.

Db Structure and Jobs ATBU

In the BizTalk Management (BizTalkMfmtDb) database, there’s a stored procedure named adm_CleanupMgmtDB. DO NOT RUN THIS SP! If you do run this stored procedure, all the entries in the db will be deleted.

Job Description
Backup BizTalk Server (BizTalkMgmtDb) This job performs full database and log backups of the BizTalk Server databases.
CleanupBTFExpiredEntriesJob_BizTalkMgmtDb This job cleans up expired BizTalk Framework (BTF) entries in the BizTalk Management (BizTalkMgmtDb) database.
DTA Purge and Archive (BizTalkDTADb) This job automatically archives data in the BizTalk Tracking (BizTalkDTADb) database and purges obsolete data.
MessageBox_DeadProcesses_Cleanup_BizTalkMsgBoxDb This job detects when a BizTalk Server host instance (NT service) has stopped and releases all work that was being done by that host instance so that it can be worked on by another host instance.
MessageBox_Message_Cleanup_BizTalkMsgBoxDb This job removes all messages that are no longer being referenced by any subscribers in the BizTalk MessageBox

This is an unscheduled job which is started by the MessageBox_Message_ManageRefCountLog_BizTalkMsgBoxDb job. Do not manually start this job.
MessageBox_Message_ManageRefCountLog_BizTalkMsgBoxDb This job manages the reference count logs for messages and determines when a message is no longer referenced by any subscriber.

Even thought this SQL Server Agent job is scheduled to run once per minute, the stored procedure that is called by this job contains logic to ensure that the stored procedure runs continually. This is by design behavior and should not be modified.
MessageBox_Parts_Cleanup_BizTalkMsgBoxDb This job removes all message parts that are no longer being referenced by any messages in the BizTalk MessageBox (BizTalkMsgBoxDb) database tables.
MessageBox_UpdateStats_BizTalkMsgBoxDb This job manually updates the statistics for the BizTalk MessageBox (BizTalkMsgBoxDb) database.
Monitor BizTalk Server This job scans the BizTalkMgmtDb, BizTalkMsgBoxDb and BizTalkDTADb database for any known issues
Operations_OperateOnInstances_OnMaster_BizTalkMsgBoxDb This job is needed for multiple MessageBox deployments. It asynchronously performs operational actions such as bulk terminate on the master MessageBox after those changes have been applied to the subordinate MessageBox.
PurgeSubscriptionsJob_BizTalkMsgBoxDb This job purges unused subscription predicates from the BizTalk Server MessageBox (BizTalkMsgBoxDb) database.
Rules_Database_Cleanup_BizTalkRuleEngineDb This job automatically purges old audit data from the Rule Engine (BizTalkRuleEngineDb) database every 90 days.
